Isabelle Duyvesteyn is a senior lecturer-researcher (associate professor) at the Department of History of International Relations, Utrecht University in the Netherlands. She completed her PhD at the Department of War Studies at King's College in London in 2002. Previously she has worked at the Royal Military Academy in the Netherlands and the Netherlands Institute for International Relations.

She is currently on research leave to head the project of the history and effectiveness of modern counter-terrorism, which is funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Research Institute of History and Culture of Utrecht University. Her research interests include the nature of war and peace, irregular warfare and strategy, and the history of terrorism and counter-terrorism. Her work has been published in several journals, among others, Civil Wars, Security Studies and Studies in Conflict and Terrorism.

Jörg LeBlanc, PhD candidate

Born in 1979 in Köln (Germany) Jörg Le Blanc began to study sociology at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-University Bonn (Germany) in 2000. The following three years he studied at the University Complutense of Madrid (Spain) and graduated in sociology at the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University of Frankfurt (Germany) in 2006. In his diploma thesis, Jörg Le Blanc explored the phenomenon of the "Recovered Enterprises" in Argentina through a case study. Based upon interviews with participants of a recovered enterprise the issue of the forced creation of a "collective autonomy" of the participants regarding the conduct of the enterprise is focused upon.  Since May 2007, Jörg Le Blanc participates as a PhD researcher in the project "A History of Counter-Terrorism" where he conducts research on Latin American counter-insurgent measures and their impacts on the societies.

Alastair Reed - Phd Candidate

Born in 1978 in the United Kingdom, Alastair joins the project as a PhD researcher examining the effectiveness of counterterrorism policies employed by governments in Asia between 1945-2005. Previously he has studied at Leiden University, where he completed an MA in Political Science. For his thesis he examined the post 9/11 counter- terrorism policies of the UK and USA, and how these altered the balance between Liberty and Security. His first degree was a M.Sci in Physics and Philosophy, from the University of Glasgow. Prior to starting this position Alastair worked in politics for a number of years, first as a policy advisor and then as a campaign manager for the Liberal Democrats in the UK.
Bart Schuurman - Researcher

Born in 1983 in Muscat, Oman, Bart joined the project after completing his Masters 'International Relations in Historical Perspective' at Utrecht University in 2009. His MA thesis investigated possible political, military and societal explanations for strong-power defeats in asymmetric conflicts from a Clausewitzian perspective. Currently he is researching the escalatory and de-escalatory effects of the various counter-terrorism measures available to Western states by examining case studies such as Italy's struggle against the Brigate Rosse and Great Britain's long entanglement in Northern Ireland.
